FERS retirement cap

2

Q. I am a special provision FERS employee and, with my credited military service, I will have 34 years of creditable service for the annuity computation. With 1.7 percent per year for the first 20 years and 1 percent per year 20 years, my calculation has: 20 years x 1.7 = 34 percent, 14 years x 1 percent = 14 percent.  34 percent + 14 percent = 48 percent of my high-3. Is there a cap on the FERS annuity calculation like there is on CSRS?

A. No, there isn’t. To meet the 80 percent limit applied to earned CSRS annuities, a FERS employee would have to work for nearly 73 years.

  1. Help!
Tell me what office at OPM to go to – to get my issue straightened out.
I received a notice in July saying that I had replied to the retirement survey saying that I made over the $15, limit. So they were cutting my supplement by $700 a month. I immediately began calling OPM. I’ve left several messages with the retirement survey office, spoken to 3 different people, sent emails to the people that they said would know the problem, spent 48 minutes on the phone waiting for the PA office to tell me “- ah – call OPM DC Surveys branch”,
Two weeks ago – I finally talked to the PM of the survey branch who told me that there was a $525 cap on annuity supplements – but he would find out the correct person for me to speak to – but I haven’t been able to reach him since.

Please tell me what office I can actually talk to in order to clear this up – it’s going on 4 months now.

    Thanks,
    Y. Powell

    • I’ve referred your email to OPM’s Office of Communications, which will arrange for the right office to get in touch with you.
