Retirement date on a holiday

2

Q. I am 57 with 35 years in CSRS and planning to retire at the end of the year. Can I retire on a holiday, Friday Jan. 1, 2016, or on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016? If so, then would I get paid for the holiday and still get my annuity payment on Feb. 1, 2016?

A. You can retire on any day of the week you want to, holiday or no holiday. Financially, it would make better sense to retire at the close of business on Friday, Jan. 1, which would be the end of a 40 hours work week. Note: Since you’d be retiring in the middle of a pay period, you wouldn’t get any credit for annual or sick leave you would have earned if you’d retired at the end of a pay period.
