Q. I took the Voluntary Early Retirement Authority in July 2012 under FERS because of health reasons. I had 24.9 years and I get the special retirement supplement. Since then, I was awarded disability benefits from the Social Security office with benefits beginning Jan 1, 2013. Since I did not retire under FERS disability with the Postal Service, do I still get to draw the supplement with my annuity along with my Social Security disability?

Q. I am a 33-year Postal Service employee. Thirty-three years ago, union officials told me that the government was working on eliminating CSRS Offset and the windfall elimination provision all civil service employees. As of today, they are both still in place. I feel lied to and cheated by my government. Politicians can collect multiple pensions, yet if I try and collect my Social Security benefits, though I have worked enough quarters, I would be penalized. Then, if my spouse dies, I am not entitled to her Social Security benefits, as I understand it. Is there a chance that these…

Q. When I retire, I will be 59½ and will have 30 years of service at the Postal Service. I will not have any earned income from that point on. I understand federal and state taxes will be taken out of my FERS annuity and any money I take out of my Thrift Savings Plan. Will I also have Supplemental Security Income deducted from these two sources? Also will my special retirement supplement and, when I turn 62, my SSI benefit also be subject to federal and state taxes?

Q. The Postal Service has sent me a letter stating advance notice of my being reassigned because of reorganization, transfer of operation. If I am offered a position outside of 50 miles of duty station, would I qualify for discontinued service retirement? The Office of Personnel Management states DSR rules on commuting as 50 miles. If it’s over 50 miles, could I retire under a DSR and receive an unreduced annuity and the special retirement supplement? Would I have to wait until I got my separation papers, or could I put in for retirement once I got my reduction-in-force notice?…

Q. Postal worker. CSRS retirement plan. Currently work full time limited duty with 20 percent permanent disability accepted by the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs. Have new personal disability, cancer. Will be unable to work now. 33 years service. Age 53 in September. Do I seek CSRS disability retirement for my illness, or OWCP disability from my job injury? Are there other financial considerations I’m missing?

Q. I am a Postal Service employee under FERS. I am going to retire soon with 26½ years at age 60. Do I have to take the special retirement supplement, or can I waive it? If I take it, do I have to start taking Social Security at 62, or do I have an option to wait until I am older? If I decide to purchase an annuity with my Thrift Savings Plan balance from MetLife, is that annuity protected if MetLife folds?

Q. I am 41 and a “gray area retiree from the Maryland Army National Guard. I am employed with the Postal Service (FERS) and have about 19 years of service (including five years active duty, which I already paid back). I also collect 30 percent disability from the Veterans Affairs Department. In planning my final retirement living, it seems if I retire at my minimum retirement age of 57, I should be immediately eligible for full annuities of the following, with no penalties or offsets: FERS basic annuity Social Security offset (until 62) TSP annuity (no IRS penalty) VA compensation…
