Q. I am 51 and retired with 22 years with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. In our agency, we could retire at age 50 with 20 years of service or at any age with 25 years of service. Our maximum retirement age is 57. I thought I understood from retirement training that in our special circumstances, earnings rules did not apply until we reached age 57, or when we would have been forced to retire. In other words, after early but full eligibility retirement, we could work and we would not be penalized or limited with new income, in that…

Q. The Postal Service in my installation is transferring all mail to another installation more than 50 miles away. This will affect more than 80 percent of the workforce, including myself. I am a clerk, not a carrier. They may offer me a clerk position less than 40 hours, or a carrier position, which is a different craft. I am a career employee. Would it be possible for me to retire with a unreduced annuity and the special retirement supplement? I am in FERS with over 27 years at age 59.

Q. I’m under FERS and worried about a reduction in my Social Security benefits after retirement. My Social Security benefits are not calculated on an assumption of $110,000 a year until I retire. If I elect to retire with 31 years of service at my minimum retirement age of 56, will the years following my retirement without paying (or paying Social Security at a lower income level) reduce my Social Security benefits when I claim them at 62 or older?

Q. I took an early retirement incentive from the Postal Service beginning Jan. 31, after serving 23 years, at age 56. I have started receiving my annuity benefit from the post office, but have yet to get the special retirement supplement that I was supposed to receive. Do I have to communicate with anyone special, or do I just have to wait for things to be calculated?

Q. I am in FERS, born June 20, 1953, with a service computation date of Nov. 6, 1983, and eligible to retire June 19. I just saw where my position is going to be a part of the reduction in force. If the RIF happens before my retirement date, will I still get my special retirement supplement? Would I get a buyout?

Q: Are the Social Security supplement and the special retirement supplement automatic, or do you have to contact OPM to set this up at the minimum age of eligibility? I retired at 52.4 years of age and I turn 56 in April. I was wondering if I have to contact OPM to recieve this supplement? A: Payment of the special retirement supplement is automatic.

Q. I am a Civil Service Retirement System/Federal Employees Retirement System offset employee with 31 years of service, and I have been offered Voluntary Early Retirement Authority and Voluntary Separation Incentive Payments (VERA/VSIP). I would like to know how a VERA/VSIP would affect my retirement. I have been depositing the maximum in my TSP account, and I see that the government is not required to match it. Does government matching or not matching my deposit depend on the agency I work for? A. To estimate what your annuity would be, use the formulas for each retirement system: FERS: 0.01 x…
