Early retirement

Q. I am a CSRS employee who will be turning 55 in January. I will have 32 years of service. If I retire during the summer of this year, how much will I be penalized?

A. You can’t retire on your own volition before you reach age 55. However, if you were offered an opportunity to retire under the Voluntary Early Retirement Authority, your annuity would be reduced by 1/6 of 1 percent for every month you were under age 55.
