Re-employed annuitant

Q. I just retired Dec. 31 with 23 years at age 61 and was a FERS employee. My account was just finalized and on May 1, I will draw my first computed payment. Can I go back to work for the federal government and apply for positions? If so what is my category I fall under — reinstatement eligible, current federal employee, etc.?

A. You would be a re-employed annuitant and your salary would be offset by the amount of your annuity. If you worked for one year full time, you’d be entitled to a supplemental annuity. If you worked for five years full time, you’d be entitled to a redetermined annuity.
