Self-only to self and family

Q. I am a civilian covered under a FERS law enforcement retirement. If I switch from self-only to self and family within five years of retirement, will my family maintain Federal Employees Health Benefits coverage? Also, can I change from a self-only to a self-and-family policy after retirement?

A. You only have to be enrolled in the FEHB program for the five consecutive years before you retire. It makes no difference if you are enrolled in the self or the self-and-family option. As a retiree, you could switch from one kind of coverage to another during any open season.
