Q. I am a retired E-6 (20 years) who is buying back his military time. When eligible for FERS retirement, I intend to waive my military retirement pay and combine all my military years plus my FERS years to calculate my FERS annuity. My understanding is that this will not affect my other retiree benefits, such as Tricare, BX commissary, etc. Is this true?
A. That’s what I’ve been told by other members of the military who have waived their military retired pay and had their active-duty service combined with their civilian service.
