Medicare and same-sex married couple

Q. My spouse and I are a same-sex couple and recently married in Maryland. I have been a federal employee for 16 years and my spouse is self-employed and has Medicare. Is it a good idea to put him on my health plan? If he is on my plan, what part of Medicare should he keep or should he drop Medicare all together?

A. Whether you are a same-sex or opposite-sex married couple, the answer is the same. The decision is one that only the two of you can make after weighing the pros and cons. What doesn’t take any analysis is this: If your spouse is covered by Medicare Part A, he should continue that coverage because it is free, having been paid for through payroll deductions.
