First annuity check

Q. If a FERS employee were going to retire on Dec. 31, when would that retiree receive his first retirement annuity check from the Office of Personnel Management? Would it be any different if the FERS employee were to wait another year?

A. I don’t know when you’d receive your first interim annuity payment. OPM will try to send it to you within a few weeks after it receives the paperwork from your agency. Only your agency can tell you how long it takes them to do that. To find out if waiting a year or more to retire would result in faster processing, consult a fortune teller.
