Medicare and spouse's FEHB coverage

0

Q. I am a retired civil service annuitant. I am approaching 65, and my wife is 61. We are enrolled in the family Blue Cross/Blue Shield health plan. What would happen to my wife’s coverage if I enrolled in one of the Medicare plans? Would I be better off to skip the Medicare options because she has not reached Medicare age?

A. As long as you are enrolled in the self-and-family option of your Federal Employees Health Benefits plan, your wife will continue to be covered by it, whether or not you enroll in Medicare. While you should enroll in Medicare Part A because you already paid for that benefit, it’s up to you to decide if you want to enroll in Part B and pay the premiums.
