Retirement calculator

Q. I’m a FERS employee. Where do I go to find a calculator on when I can retire?

A. Finding out when you can retire and how much your annuity will be is simple. To retire on an immediate, unreduced annuity, you only have to meet one of the following age and service requirements:

  • 62 with 5
  • 60 with 20
  • Minimum retirement age (MRA) with 30 (MRAs range between 55 and 57, depending on your year of birth)

You can also retire under the MRA+10 provision; however, your annuity would be reduced by 5 percent for every year you were under age 62.

The formula for computing an annuity is equally simple: .01 x your high-3 x all years and full months of service. The multiplier is increased to .011 if you retire at age 62 with at least 20 years of service.

However, if you don’t feel like working up the numbers on your own – or your pencil lead breaks – you can always use the handy calculator at
