I just received a letter from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) stating that I am going to receive the Code 67 supplement as part of my Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) retirement. I was awarded Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) as of September 2015. Does my SSDI payment stop me from receiving the Code 67 supplement?
A. If you are a non-disability FERS retiree, you’d be entitled to the Special Retirement Supplement (SRS), whether or not you were later approved for SSDI benefits. If you were a FERS disability retiree, you wouldn’t have been entitled to the SRS at any time.
I was recently released from federal service employment with a total of 31/2 years of service due to a disability. Under FERS, to draw disability benefits you have to have a disability that would be disabling for a year or more. My disability does not.
I am 60 years old now. Could I still retire under FERS and draw SRS as well?
Yes, you could apply for an immediate annuity and receive both it and the SRS.
I qualify for the FERS supplemental after taking an “early out” in March 2012. My MRA of 56 yrs old is May 2016. Do I need to contact OPM to initiate the supplemental payment or will it just start when it should? I have tried calling and writing to OPM over the past months with NO response whatsoever. All I want to know if if I need to do anything prior to May 2016 to start recieving the supplemental payment. Thanks so much.
You don’t need to do anything. The SRS will automatically be added to your annuity when you are eligible.
I retired at 58 having the MRA. I then applied for SSDI have been approved. I am now receiving my Pension, a Social Security Supplement as well as Social Security Disability. Am I entitled to the social security supplement? I’m making mor now than when I was working. I don’t want to owe hundreds or thousands in back taxes. Help please.
There’s nothing to worry about. Because you retired on an immediate annuity at your MRA before applying and being approved for SSDI, you are entitled to that annuity, the special retirement supplement, and your SSDI benefit.
