Early retirement

Q: Can a 56-year-old with 15 years in the federal system submit paperwork to retire?

A: As a FERS employee, you could retire under the MRA+10 provision (minimum retirement age plus at least 10 but fewer than 30 years of service). However, your annuity would be reduced by 5 percent for every year you were under age 62. You could reduce or eliminate the age penalty by postponing the receipt of your annuity until a later date.
