Social Security benefits

Q: I receive survivor annuity benefits because my husband, who worked for the post office for 25 years, died in 1993. He didn’t have Social Security. Will my annuity benefits be affected if I begin collecting my own Social Security at age 62, or if I decide to wait several years to begin collecting full-time Social Security benefits?

A: The fact that you are receiving a civil service survivor annuity will have no effect on your earned Social Security benefit, no matter when you decide to start collecting it.
