FEGLI and termination

0

Q. I was placed on nonpaid suspension on April 16, 2012. I was terminated April 8, 2013. When does my Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance coverage end?

A. According to the Office of Personnel Management, “FEGLI coverage continues during the first 12 months in nonpay status. No premium payments are required, unless receiving benefits from the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs. Life insurance coverage terminates at the end of this 12-month period, with a 31-day extension of coverage and right to convert to an individual policy. If the employee was terminated in the middle of the 12-month period then it would be the date on which he was terminated.”
