VERA/VSIP and best date to retire

0

Q. I have applied for Voluntary Early Retirement Authority/Voluntary Separation Incentive Pay. If I get it, according to the VERA/VSIP rules, I must retire on or before March 31. Could you please give me the best dates to retire, assuming it will take them a couple of months to process the papers?

A. I can’t tell you the best date to retire from a case processing point of view. I can tell you that you should retire at the end of a pay period to get credit for any sick or annual leave you would have accrued during that pay period, and that you should retire as late in the month as possible to avoid too large a gap between when you retire and when you are put on the annuity roll. In 2014, both of those goals would be met by retiring on Saturday, March 22, 2014.
