Counting time

Q. I have a question concerning counting years of service. For counting 20 years of service, is it 20 times 365? Or does an employee need a full year to be creditable for retirement purposes?

A. To see how that’s figured for annuity computation purposes, go to www.opm.gov/retirement-services/publications-forms/csrsfers-handbook/c050.pdf and scroll to Section 50A2.1-2B. A shorter way is to look at your service computation date. If it was July 1, 1993, you would have completed 20 years of service at close of business on June 30, 2013. If in doubt, check with your personnel office.
