Social Security supplement

Q. If receiving the supplement ends at age 62, does this mean I must file for Social Security at that age and be locked in for SS at the 62 age rate or can I wait until the age I select? A. There is no requirement that you file for a Social Security benefit when the special retirement supplement ends. However, the amount of that Social Security benefit will be the one you were entitled to when you retired.

so, by reading this. can I assume that there is NO benefit to delay collecting social security after age 62 if I collect the suppliment?

    • Most FERS retirees who are receiving the special retirement supplement elect to apply for Social Security at age 62 to avoid the drop in income.

  2. My understanding from talking to Social Security is that your SS income will be based on the year you retired not the amount if you had worked until age 62.
