Credit for active-duty service

4

Q. I have 22 years of military service and 15 years in FERS. I’ll be 60 years old in May. Can I be credited for both military and FERS?

A. You can only receive credit for your active-duty service if you make a deposit for that time to the civilian retirement system, plus accrued interest. Further, if you are receiving military retired pay, you’d have to waive that pay when you retire.

  1. I am a FERS employee receiving military retired pay. Please tell me more about military retired pay being waived when I receive Social Security.

    • What you quoted is correct, and applies solely to the FERS annuity. It has no affect on your entitlement to a Social Security benefit based on all your Social Security-covered employment.

    • Probably not, because you are way over the maximum age for new hires. However, the only way you can find out for sure is to check with the Border Patrol.
