USPS retirement and health care rates

2

Q. I am a rural carrier planning on retiring from the U.S. Postal Service next year. What is the approximate cost of carrying on with my health insurance for my husband and I? This cost could greatly affect my decision to retire.

A. You can compare your current premiums with those you’d pay as a USPS retiree by going to www.opm.gov/healthcare-insurance/healthcare/plan-information/premiums and clicking on U.S. Postal Rates and Non-Postal Rates. As you are aware, the premiums of USPS workers are lower because of union-negotiated agreements — your rates as a retiree will be higher.
