Q. I recently retired under FERS and I’m currently receiving special retirement supplement. Do you think if the Congress stopped special retirement supplement pay, would that apply tor future retirees, not current retirees?
A. Eliminating the SRS for future retirees would be easier to do than eliminating it retroactively. Taking away a future benefit is more likely to pass judicial scrutiny than taking it away from those who are already receiving it.

To piggy back of that – would it apply for Future Federal Employees or Current Federal Employees? You would think that with Current Federal Employees – we should be grandfathered into a FERS Supplemental.
At a minimum, everyone who has at least 20 years of government service should be contacting their Congress and Senator representatives to ask for this grandfather language into the legislation.
If they just grandfathered in those who have at least 20 years or more of Federal Service, that would take care of those who have been planning this for retirement planning, while those with less years would have time to adjust for their retirement.

Hello, At this point, we all still need to be very worried about the supplemental annuity. I retired usps, with effective annuity calculation date of June 1st, 2017. 58 years old, 31+ years service. Now going on 5 months, and still receiving just interim payments. 2+ months ago, opm sent me a letter informing me that I am eligible for the supplement, and info on exactly how much I’ll be getting, along with retroactive amount currently due to me. I’ve heard absolutely nothing since. OPM maybe holding out for the budget to be finalized? Man I hope not. The House version leaves it wide open as to whether it would be retroactive to include current recipients! Keep contacting your Senators and Congressman!
To the best of my knowledge, OPM isn’t delaying the processing of FERS retirement applications that include the special retirement supplement.
Thank you very much for the response Reg Jones. The situation is just a little nerve wracking. Was comfortable all these years, thinking that if we follow all the rules, we would get the good “three legged stool” to stand on for retirement. Last Thursday’s Senate vote really helped our cause. This week, it’s back to the House for them to act.

Question – the FERS retirement supplemental – from my understanding as of last week, congress has voted against taking way the FERS retirement supplemental. Is that correct, is this only for the FY 18 Budget? Also will this issue arise again for the FY19 Budget?
