Q. I recently resigned my position as postmaster to take advantage of the $20,000 incentive buyout. July 31 was my last day of work. I am 54 years old with 10-plus years of service. I left behind 796.5 hours of sick leave.  Will these hours be converted to service credit? I don’t plan to apply for my FERS annuity until I am 62. A. As a deferred annuitant, you wouldn’t receive any credit for your unused sick leave.

Q. After working for approximately 11 years in the private sector and paying into Social Security, I joined the Foreign Service in March 1979. I resigned in July 1983 to get married and start a family. I got back the $4,000 I paid into my retirement. In June 1985, I rejoined the Foreign Service and because my original separation was for the purpose of marriage, I was brought back on at the same grade and step level I was at, my leave balances at the time of my separation were reinstated, and I continued to earn annual and sick leave at the same…

Q. I am prior Army Reserve for eight years, about two-plus years on active duty. Got out in 1992. If I were to take a GS position, would I be able to add my time in service to those years at retirement? My plan is to work at least 10-12 more years. I worked as contract for the Air Force for the past 3½ years and previously at Brooke Army Medical Center for one year as contract. Would taking a GS or Department of Veterans Affairs position be to my benefit? A. I don’t know if it would be to…

Q. If you are fired, does this make you ineligible for federal retirement annuity payments? I have the option to resign or be fired; would going the firing route make me ineligible for federal benefits? I have 21 years of federal service under FERS. A. If you don’t take a refund of your retirement contributions, you’d be eligible for a deferred annuity at age 60.

Q. I am a FERS employee with 31 years of creditable service but will not reach my minimum retirement age (56) until May 2013. I am faced with possible termination but plan to resign. I understand that deferred retirees are not eligible for supplemental annuity, nor are they eligible to enroll in life insurance and health benefits. What if I am terminated rather than resigning? Will I be eligible for immediate annuity plus supplement and eligible to enroll in health benefits? Or I will only be eligible for deferred retirement in 2013 after reaching my MRA? A. It won’t make any difference to…

Q. I am 50 years old with 30 years of service. I plan on resigning from my federal government job. In three to five years, I will try to be rehired at age 54 or 55. What will happen to my sick leave balance? Also, as I understand it, I will be able to retire normally at my minimum retirement age (56) if rehired. There appears to be no minimum amount of time I need to be re-employed with the federal government to retire as long as I meet MRA and the 30-year requirement. My health insurance will be good also…

Q. I am 47 years old, and I’m a nurse in a government hospital. In 2009, I injured my back, which required surgery. I’ve been off sick since 2010, going in and out of doctors. Early this year, I was told by my superiors to come back to work, but I’m still not feeling well. I sometimes can’t even walk because of the screws put into my back. I have asked for early retirement because I have more than 25 years of service, but they won’t allow me. They say I must resign if I don’t want to work. Please…

Q. I am a FERS employee, age 54½, and I will have 20 years of service as an Army civilian later this month. My local human resources office sees no possibility of a Voluntary Early Retirement Authority. Once I hit 20 years of service, is my future annuity protected even if I leave service prior to my minimum retirement age of 56? What I’d prefer to do, if possible, is leave service and not begin collecting an annuity until I turn 60. Will that prevent me from having my annuity reduced as someone who would be under 62? And what…

Q. I worked for federal government for 20 years under CSRS, then resigned in 1997 and left my retirement contributions in CSRS, understanding that I could start to receive an annuity at age 62.  Since that time, I have worked for 15 years for state government, paying into Social Security. If I were to return to federal service, into which retirement system would I be placed? What would the benefits be to returning to federal service as far as retirement benefits concerning CSRS and Social Security? A. Because you left your contributions in the retirement fund, you would be eligible…
