Brother's death

0

Q. My brother died recently and was receiving retirement pay from his annuity.  How do I find out if there is money left and who is the beneficiary, if any was listed?.  And if no beneficiary was listed, how do we access the money or can we?

A. Call the U.S. Office of Personnel Management at 1-888-767-6738 and report his death. OPM will be able to determine if he elected a beneficiary or beneficiaries. Assuming there isn’t any surviving spouse, any unexpended contributions left in his account would be distributed according to the standard order of precedence. OPM’s benefits specialist will be able to explain the process to you.
