Social Security and Medicare Part B

Q. I am currently a civil service retiree. I was told that if I apply for Social Security benefits, I will be required to also sign up for Medicare Part B or I cannot get the SS benefits. Is this true?

A. No, it isn’t true. However, when you apply for a Social Security benefit, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. If you don’t want Part B, you’ll have to say that you don’t want it.
