FERS retirement date

Q. What is the better retirement date for FERS: Dec. 29, 2012, or Dec, 31, 2012?

A. You could retire at close of business Friday, Dec. 28, if that’s when you have completed your two-week tour of duty, or Saturday, Dec. 29, the official end of the pay period. Retiring Monday, Dec. 31, would make no sense, since, although it’s the first day of the work week, it would only gain you one day’s additional pay but wouldn’t earn you any additional credit for annual or sick leave. To do that, you’d have to stay until the end of that pay period.
