Sick leave and service length

Q. I will be 62 in November 2014 but will have only 19 years and six months of service under FERS. If I have enough sick leave to add six more months to my service such that it equals 20 years or more, does that qualify me for the 1.1 percent year of service annuity calculation rate?

A. No. Only actual service counts. Unused sick leave is added only after an employee’s retirement eligibility based on actual service is determined.
