RIF, severance pay and full annuity?

Q. I’m a FERS employee, age 52 with 29 years. If I’m affected by a reduction in force, would I be eligible for severance pay, and then, when I reach 30 years (age 53), would I then get the full FERS annuity?

A. No, you wouldn’t be eligible for severance pay. Instead, you’d be eligible for early retirement. As a FERS early retiree, you wouldn’t be subject to the 5 percent-per-year penalty for retiring before age 62.
