Military buyback

Q. I am retired Army, 22 years. I have applied for a GS position. If I accept the position and buy back my Army time, do I still collect my Army retirement while working the GS position? Does waiving my military retirement mean I give up my military retirement at GS retirement and then accept only a GS retirement at a combined percentage?

A. If you make a deposit to get credit for your active-duty service, you can continue to collect your military retired pay until you retire from your civilian position. That’s when you’ll have to waive your military retired pay. The annuity you would then receive would be based on your combined years of military and civilian service.
