Wrong retirement system?

Q. I started federal service May 12, 1986. I was told that I was tagged as CSRS Interim because I didn’t have five years of service prior to FERS being initiated in 1987. Is that the proper process, and where can I read about this?

A. Yes, you were correctly put in CSRS Interim and, when FERS became effective Jan. 1, 1987, converted to FERS. You’ll find what you’re looking for at www.opm.gov/retirement-services/publications-forms/csrsfers-handbook/c010.pdf.
