SRS eligibility

Q. I started working for the government on May 5, 1986. I am covered under FERS and would like to know if I would be eligible for the special retirement supplement if I plan to retire in August 2014. I will have turned 59 years old on July 24, 2014, and will have worked 28 years. If not, when would be the earliest date I would be eligible to receive the SRS prior to Social Security benefits at age 62?

A. No, you wouldn’t. To receive the special retirement supplement, you’d have to retire at age 60.
