Creditable service

Q. I am in FERS with slightly more than 20 years of creditable service. Several months ago, you advised a former judicial law clerk, who had served in the 1980s, that he/she could obtain credit for his/her service. In 1991-92, I served as a law clerk to a federal appeals court judge. Is this service creditable for FERS? While it appears that it counts for leave purposes, my service computation date for retirement is about one year later than it is for leave.

A. Because your nondeduction service was performed on or after Jan. 1, 1989, it isn’t creditable for retirement purposes.
