Sick leave and retirement date

0

Q. I will be 59½ on July 20, 2014. I have 1,102 sick leave hours. Can I retire on that date and simply use the sick leave? In other words, by Jan. 20, 2015, when I turn 60, I will have a zero balance? I am not interested in adding the sick leave to my annuity, but want to leave early at 59½ instead of 60.

A. No, you cannot burn off your sick leave. It can only be used for purposes spelled out in law and regulation.
