Early retirement and annuity reduction

0

Q. I am under FERS, 57 years old and will have 30 years in on Feb. 12, 2014. I have been asked if I would take a buyout and leave Dec. 31. What impact would retiring two months early have on me financially? Would I still get the special retirement supplement?  Would my pension be reduced?

A. Your annuity would be one-sixth of 1 percent less than if you worked two more months. On the other hand, by accepting an early retirement offer, you’d be exempt from the age penalty for having fewer than 30 years of service. Further, you’d be entitled to the special retirement supplement.
