Military buyback

Q. I separated under FERS in 2001 and just started receiving my pension. When I noticed it didn’t include my active-duty time, I learned that I had to have bought that back before I separated. I don’t recall anybody ever mentioning this. What’s the reasoning behind not letting people buy back after they’ve retired? Is there any way I can still buy it back?

A. The law that requires you to have made a deposit before you retire is the same one that prohibits you from making a deposit after you retire.
