Retirement date and use-or-lose leave

0

Q. I will have 448 hours of annual leave accrued when I plan to retire on Jan. 3. By retiring after Jan. 1, will I lose 208 hours and not be paid for it? If so, would Dec. 31 be a better bet?

A. Annual leave that exceeds the annual carryover amount isn’t lost until the beginning of the following leave year. Since the 2014 leave year doesn’t begin until Jan. 12, you can retire on any date you prefer up to and including Jan. 11 and be paid for all your accrued and unused annual leave.
