Military buyback eligibility

Q. My wife has 28 years of combined service with the Air Force Reserve and the Air National Guard. She has never been called to active duty and has only been employed in the private sector as a civilian. If she takes a GS position now, will any of her service time be eligible for buyback into FERS?

A. Only periods of active-duty service are creditable. Since she undoubtedly had periods of active duty for training (ANACDUTRA), they would be creditable if she made a deposit to the civilian retirement system.
