Age penalty

Q. If I retire at age 54 with 31 years of service under FERS, am I subject to the age penalty? Would I be subject to the same penalty if I were to retire at age 56 with 33 years of service. My minimum retirement age is 56.

A. Unless your agency offers you an opportunity to retire early under the Voluntary Early Retirement Authority, you can’t retire before you reach your MRA. There wouldn’t be any age penalty if you retired at your MRA with at least 30 years of service.
