Q. I am a retired veteran (May 2000) with 24 years of military service. I am a GS-14 with 10 years of federal service at age 55. If I purchase my military time back, I will be eligible to retire at age 56 with over 35 years of creditable service. Will I be eligible for the special retirement supplement at that time until I reach age 62?
A. Yes, you will. However, you need to keep two things in mind. First, when you retire, you’ll have to waive your military retired pay. Second, the special retirement supplement will be based solely on your actual years of FERS service. Active-duty service for which you’ve made a deposit won’t be included.
