CSRS Offset or FERS?

Q. Getting ready to retire next year. Using the Office of Personnel Management retirement calculator. When choosing what retirement system, it keeps telling me CSRS offset for my start date Oct. 24, 1984. However, I have been in FERS all along.

A. If you were first hired after Dec. 31, 1983, you are covered by FERS. I have no idea why the OPM calculator would treat you as if you were in CSRS Offset. Just ignore the calculator and do your own figuring. The formula is simple: .01 x the average of your highest three consecutive years of basic pay x your years and full months of service.
