Retirement during a RIF

2

Q. I noticed you can retire during a reduction in force at below the minimum retirement age with 25 years of service. However, I’ve also read that those people are not entitled to the special retirement supplement since they are below MRA. Can they be paid the supplement once they reach MRA, even though previously retired?

A. Any FERS employee who accepts early retirement at 50 years old with 20 years of service or with 25 years of service at any age is entitled to the special retirement supplement when he reaches his MRA. Of course, the MRA can be reduced or suspended if you have earnings that exceed the annual Social Security limit.

  1. I retired FERS VERA and recently turned 56 in April, my MRA age, but did not receive my supplement in May check. When should I expect to receive the supplement?
