High-3 calculation

Q. I am 63 years old with 20 years of federal service. I am in FERS and I just got promoted to GS 13. How long to I have to work to get the GS 13 included as part of my high-3?

A. A high-3 is based on an employee’s highest three consecutive years of average basic pay. Therefore, every pay period after your promotion will be included in that calculation. To have the full effect of your promotion reflected in your annuity, you’d have to work for 78 biweekly pay periods.
