Buying back military time

Q. If I buy back my military time, will it count, and is it calculated under my FERS covered service? Will it be included in my FERS supplement check? I’m a postal employee that started in 1986. I was in the military from 1981-1985.

A. If you make a deposit for your active-duty service, plus accrued interest, you’ll get credit for that time in determining your years of civilian service and have it used in the computation of your annuity. However, it won’t be included when computing your special retirement supplement. That’s because the SRS is paid out of the Civil Service Retirement and Disability Fund, not the Social Security fund.

  1. In Nov 2018 I will be 56. I will have 15 years FERS service. I am buying back my 20 years military retirement. In total, I will have a FERS retirement based on 35 years. According to your statement above” “However, it won’t be included when computing your special retirement supplement (SRS). That’s because the SRS is paid out of the Civil Service Retirement and Disability Fund, not the Social Security fund”, will I be able to collect special retirement supplement based on my 15 years of FERS service? In other words, must I have a minimum 20 years actual FERS years in order to collect the SRS or can it be computated on my 15 years of actual FERS service?
