Ramifications of switch from covered to noncovered LEO

0

Q. I am a federal law enforcement retiree after serving 22 years (GS-13) and reaching the maximum age limit. I may have an opportunity to work for a federal agency in a permanent position GS-12. What will the ramifications be on my retirement?

A. Moving from a covered to a noncovered position would have no effect on your entitlement to an LEO annuity. It would be calculated using the enhanced formula and any service beyond 20 years would be calculated using the standard formula. As a rule, if you went to work for the government as a re-employed annuitant, the salary of your new position would be offset by the amount of your annuity.
