Unused sick leave

0

Q. I am under FERS and plan to retire in June 2015 after five years with the Veterans Affairs Department. Am I entitled to my unused sick leave? If I am, how is it calculated and how is it paid out?

A. Unused sick leave has no cash value. When you meet the age and service requirements to retire, those hours are added to your actual service and used in the computation of your annuity. More importantly, with five years of service, you could only retire if you are age 62 or older. If you aren’t, you would only be able to resign from the government and apply for a deferred annuity at age 62.
