Disability retirement conversion

Q. My ex-husband took a CSRS disability retirement two years ago after 33 years and 10 months of service. He will be 55 years old in December. Does his disability retirement automatically convert to regular retirement on his birthday?

A. Unless they recover from their disabilities, the disability annuities of CSRS retirees are never converted to regular annuities. In contrast, the disability annuities of FERS retirees are converted to regular annuities at age 62.
