Military buyback

Q. I didn’t retire from the military. I was medically separated. So why do I have to do a military buyback for 12½ years in uniform? I have been with the Defense Department for almost 13 years but have received a length of service award for 24 years. Am I missing something here?

A. The length of service pin was based on the service computation date for leave accumulation purposes. It isn’t related to your length of service for retirement. To get credit for that period of active-duty service, you’ll have to make a deposit to the retirement fund, plus accrued interest.
