Q. Can a survivor annuity be terminated if the anticipated survivor predeceases retiree?

A. Any reduction in an annuity to provide a current spouse survivor annuity will terminate on the first day of the month after the current spouse dies. See www.opm.gov/retirement-services/publications-forms/csrsfers-handbook/c052.pdf. To report the death of a spouse, call the Office of Personnel Management’s Retirement Information Office at 888-767-6738 or 724-794-2005.
