Disability retirement and health insurance

Q. If a FERS employee goes out with a disability, where can they get their health insurance, or can they keep what they have?

A. If you were enrolled in the Federal Employees Health Benefits program for the five consecutive years before you retire on disability, you could carry that coverage into retirement. If you weren’t, you couldn’t, unless you were granted a waiver, which is rarely given.
