Law enforcement pay

Q. My husband is a federal police officer on Fort Benning, Ga. The police officers do not receive law enforcement pay, but the firefighters do. Does law enforcement pay affect retirement very much?

A. Retirement annuities are based on the average of an employee’s highest three consecutive years of basic pay and the formula used to compute the annuity. That formula may the standard one or an enhanced one that’s used for law enforcement officers, firefighters and air traffic controllers.

For that enhanced benefit they make higher contributions to the retirement fund and face mandatory retirement.
